Support for children, teens, and families navigating medical challenges, neurodivergence, or trauma‑related stress

How I support children, teens, and their families
I work with children and teens who have had to navigate experiences many adults never face. This can include medical issues, trauma, and the reality of being neurodivergent in systems that do not always fit them.
Children and teens who work with me often shoulder more than people realize. They’re navigating ongoing stress, intense emotions, and, for some, a clear “before and after” in their lives. Parents may be doing everything they can and still feel worried, worn down, or unsure what will actually help.
My focus is on creating a reliable and responsive relationship where your child or teen can show up as they are. They don’t have to be “the good kid,” “the brave patient,” or the one who holds everything together for everyone else.
What we may explore together
In our work together, I pay close attention to how stress, trauma, medical experiences, and neurodivergence are showing up in your child’s body, emotions, and relationships. We may explore:
- how overwhelming experiences show up in their mood, behavior, and nervous system
- the impact of medical procedures, hospitalizations, or ongoing health concerns
- how neurodivergence shapes daily life, including strengths and challenges
- the roles they may have taken on in the family, spoken or unspoken
- trauma, including sexual harm and boundary violations
My intention is not to “fix” your child, but to help them feel more understood, supported, and less alone with their experience. Change becomes possible when they feel safe rather than pressured.
Support for parents
When a child struggles over time, the adults around them are often stretched thin. In my work with children and teens, I also meet with parents to support their child and the family as a whole. You may feel exhausted, anxious about the future, and unsure what will actually make a difference. There may also be grief in realizing life doesn’t look the way you imagined it would. I see you as part of the healing system.
Parent sessions may focus on:
- understanding your child’s behavior through a trauma‑ and nervous‑system‑aware lens
- supporting neurodivergent kids without shaming or over‑pathologizing
- navigating the emotional impact of medical crises and chronic illness on the family system
- acknowledging the grief of a life that looks different from what you imagined and turning toward what feels possible now
- responding to your child in ways that are effective and sustainable for you
You do not need to have the “right” language or a perfect history to reach out. We will begin with what is real for you right now.
What to expect when we begin
When I work with children and teens, I typically begin with a parent session to understand what has been happening, your concerns, and what has already been tried. From there, we decide together how to structure sessions. This may include:
- individual sessions with your child or teen
- a mix of child sessions and parent sessions
- occasional family sessions when helpful and appropriate
My primary therapeutic relationship is with your child or teen. Parent and family sessions are structured to support them and to help you feel clearer and more resourced in your caregiving role.
From the beginning, we will talk openly about what you are hoping for and how we will know whether therapy is helping. We’ll keep revisiting that as we go.
In‑person and online options
I work with children, teens, and families in Denver, Colorado, and online with adults and teens in participating PSYPACT states. If you are in an eligible state, we can meet online with the same depth, presence, and care as in‑person sessions.
Questions you may have about starting therapy
You might be wondering whether therapy will help, what it’s like to work with me, or what happens if you or your child has had a difficult experience with therapy in the past.
You can read more about my background, approach, and fees on the FAQ page, or bring your questions to our consultation so we can talk through them together.
